ABOUT THE PAINTING PROCESS
I prefer to paint with pastels, pencil and acrylics.
With pastels I paint on velour (velvet). Velour catches the pigment well into it, and the color doesn´t crumble off. Painting requires great care, because you can´t wipe out the mistakes. Also finding the right color requires many thin layers of color painted on top of each other (whereas with acrylics you can blend the right color in advance on a palette). Despite the amount of work they require, pastels are my favourite because of the intensity of their color. Because pastels are basically pure pigments, they don´t have many binding agents that could change color with time. There is just enough binding materials to make the pastels into sticks. You can use pastels on any coarse paper, but I prefer to use velour for the above mentioned reasons.
Even though the colors of pastels last very well, the painting must be protected under glass (using matt which prevents the glass from pressing against the painting). You cannot touch a pastel painting as you could touch for example an oil painting – the danger is that you will find some of the color on your finger and off the painting. And never place any painting in direct sunlight – no matter how lasting the colors are.
I like working with pencils just as much as I do with pastels. For years that´s all I did. Black and white is not boring – you can create unbelievably soft and detailed work with pencils.
Painting with acrylics is pleasant because you can paint with them very much in the same way as you would with oils, but they dry much faster. Also, if you so choose, you can create very water-color like paintings – and once the paint has dried it won´t smudge with water.
No matter which technique I use to do a painting, I love bringing out the details and forget myself completely in the painting while I work. I want the expression in the eyes of the horse to be exactly right (the eyes are the very soul of the painting). I want every detail to be right both in the horse as well as the tack. I want the structure of the horse to be right. I want to have movement in the painting even when the horse is not moving – I want the onlooker to feel the horse could start moving any moment. And the beauty of the horse is not in the conformation alone – it´s in the character and soul of the horse. Each horse has a personality of its own. Just look at the horse´s eyes – they reflect every emotion.
THE SIZE OF THE PAINTING
I will do the painting in the size you want. The size of the painting and how much work it requires affect the price, so I will tell the price for you when I hear more about what you want to have in your painting.
QUALITY ART MATERIALS
I buy all my painting materials from an artists´ store to make sure they are of the best quality that lasts well with time.
TIMELINES
My schedule may vary, so please make sure first what my work situation is – especially if you want to have a painting made in a hurry (for example a birthday present). In all cases I will do my best to send the finished painting within a month from the date I start working with it. Christmas presents should be ordered well in advance.
PHOTOGRAPHS
Whenever time and distance allow it, I like to meet my models myself. (This applies mostly if you live near Turku, Finland, and bring your horse here for example to compete). I take some pics of my own, but I also want to have your pictures of the horse (all pictures will be returned with the finished work). In colder climates a good reason for is this the fact that the horse looks completely different in winter and summer. In summer pictures structural details are more easily visible. Also light can change the horse into different colors – take for example the difference of bright daylight and reddish evening light. That´s why I want you to tell me, which expression and color are the best.
If you wish to combine two horses into one picture, they don´t have to pose perfectly in the same photograph. If possible, I´d still like to see a pic that has been taken of the horses together (even if that is not the picture which I will be using in making the portrait). To put it simply: it doesn´t look normal if I paint the heads of a Shetland pony and a thoroughbred in similar size. If it is not possible to have the horses in the same picture, I have to trust what you tell me about them.
The quality of the final painting depends on the photographs. If the picture is very small and smudged, I may have to do a lot of guesswork on the structural details of the horse. if the picture is sharp, the painting will be better also. In any case I try to catch the horse´s typical expression and a little “magic” also.
I can fix the ears and comb the mane for the painting and make the neck look better (but I still want to have a reference picture of the correct position so I get the right shape). And the most important thing is that I get as good a picture as possible of the horses eyes because the eyes create the whole painting.
Of course I can make a portrait out of one photograph only, but if there are more pictures, I usually get more details into the painting.
HOW TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS
The best picture is taken on the level of the eye of the horse (don´t take the picture just as the horse starts to sniff your camera).
Take the picture as near your model as possible. Concentrate on the head showing well (and if we talk about a cat or a dog, be sure the expression and the face are in sharp focus – and remember to take the pic from your pet´s eye level if you don´t want to have a portrait where your pet looks up on you).
Take your photograph in good natural light. If the sunshine is very bright, it may change colors, so check your pictures to see if the color is right. Light from the side shows bone structure well. Avoid having the light coming from the back of your model, because then the horse may be too dark in the photograph.
Check nothing casts a shadow on your model – unless you want to have that painted too.
The best angle is usually ”¾” (there is more depth than if the photograph is taken straight from the side, but of course I will paint from such a picture also). I´d prefer to see photographs that are taken from different angles and poses.
The best background color is even and light (I won´t paint the background unless you want me to, but I get the shape of the body better). If the horse is white, then of course dark background is good.
I can only paint what I see in the photographs, so if you want a certain expression / pose (eyes, ears), check that this very expression is to be seen in your photographs. Good, clear pictures make it possible to paint a good portrait.
Even if you order a black and white portrait, I still want you to tell me which of your color photographs has the right color – you can get the shades out even with pencils.
Scanned pictures / pictures sent by email don´t necessarily show the right color (one reason being the different settings in computers / printers).
And of course, if your animal friend is no longer with you, and you don´t have the best pictures, I will do my best with the ones you have. And if you want to have a color-painting out of a black and white photograph, send me some color models. You can even clip something out of a magazine as long as the color is the same.
Remember your photographs are often my only way of meeting your animal friend. If the details in the photographs are not clear for your eyes, they can´t be that for me either.
FRAMING
When I mail the painting to you, I don´t want to send it framed for the obvious reason that the glass may break and destroy the painting. Pastel paintings must be framed as soon as possible, because they are sensitive to touch. Velour keeps the color well and I always use fixative to ensure the color doesn´t crumble, but pastels are not meant to be touched. Velour, being the velvety surface, also catches dust if it is kept unprotected and removing that without harming the painting is a tough job. If you press velour with anything sharp, the marking will stay permanently.
After leaving the painting with the postal services, the responsibility for its safe arrival is transferred to the post.
ORDERING / PAYING
First send me email to leenashorses@yahoo.com and check my work situation. Tell me what you want and ask your questions. If you can, send me some reference pictures by email (But check with me first if you want to send a really big picture so my whole email doesn´t get jammed). You can also send a link to your homepage, if your horse´s picture is there. When I know how much work painting your horse requires, and the size of the painting, I can give you a price.
Once we have agreed on me painting a portrait and when it should be delivered, I will ask you to mail me your photographs and a written order (which you can also send by email). If you are not sure what kind of a painting you´d like (for example when there are more than one horse in the painting and you are not sure how they should pose together), I can make some sketches for you and email them for you to see. Once I´ve started working, I will keep you posted of my progress. When the painting is ready, I will send it to you first by email (I will take a photograph with digicamera, and email that). When you have seen the painting and accepted it, I ask you to send your payment (including the mailing costs). After receiving the payment I will confirm receiving it by email and send the painting to you. (You can pay in parts also, but the whole sum must be paid before I send the painting to you) I will send the painting insured when possible.

GIFT CARD
If you want to have a painting to be made for a friend but aren´t quite sure what kind of a painting s/he would like, I can send you a gift card. This is also a good option if there isn´t enough time to finish the painting before the required date. A gift card is a promise to your friend that you will pay for the painting s/he orders. You don´t need to pay for the card in advance – I will ask you to pay only when the painting is finished. (Please remember I will not send the painting to the recipient before it has been paid for)
MAALAAMINEN
Maalaan mieluiten pastelliväreillä, lyijykynällä ja akryyliväreillä.
Pastellityöt teen veluuripohjalle (käytännössä samettia). Veluuri imee pastellivärin hyvin sisälleen, eikä väri pölise pitkin. Työn tekeminen vaatii suurta huolellisuutta, koska veluurilta ei voi pyyhkiä virheitä pois. Samoin oikean värisävyn löytäminen vaatii useita päällekkäisiä ohuen ohuita värikerroksia (kun taas esim akryyriväreillä oikean värisävyn voi sekoittaa etukäteen paletilla). Työteliäisyydestä huolimatta pastellit ovat kuitenkin suosikkini, sillä niiden värit ovat intensiiviset. Koska pastellit ovat käytännössä melkein pelkkää pigmenttiä, niissä ei ole paljon sideaineita, jotka muuttaisivat väriä ajan myötä. Sideainetta on lisätty vain sen verran, että värit pysyvät liitumaisessa muodossa. Pastelleja voi käyttää mille tahansa karkealle paperille, mutta itse käytän mieluiten veluuria yllä mainituista syistä.
Vaikka pastellien väri on hyvin kestävää, ne pitää suojata kehystämällä lasin alle (paspispahvia käyttäen, joka estää lasin painumisen kiinni maalaukseen). Pastellimaalausta ei voi koskea samoin kuin esim öljymaalausta – vaarana on että huomaat osan väristä siirtyneen sormenpäähäsi. Ja koskaan maalausta ei saa asettaa suoraan auringonvaloon, ovat värit sitten miten kestäviä hyvänsä.
Lyijykynätyöskentelystä pidän yhtä paljon kuin pastellitöiden tekemisestä. Vuosikausiin en muita töitä tehnytkään. Mustavalkoisuus ei silti ole tylsää – lyijykynällä saa uskomattoman pehmeää ja yksityiskohtaista jälkeä aikaiseksi.
Akryylimaalaus on siitä mukavaa, että akryylejä voi käsitellä hyvin samantapaisesti kuin öljymaaleja, mutta ne kuivuvat nopeammin. Samoin niillä saa hyvin akvarellimaista jälkeä aikaiseksi – ja kun maali on kuivunut, se ei enää reagoi veteen.
Käytänpä sitten mitä keinoa hyvänsä taulun tekemiseen, rakastan yksityiskohtien esille tuomista ja unohdun kerta kaikkiaan maalaukseen sitä tehdessäni. Haluan, että ilme hevosen silmissä on juuri oikea (silmät ovat koko kuvan sielu). Haluan, että jokainen solki hevosen varusteissa on kohdallaan. Haluan että hevosen rakenne on oikea. Haluan että kuvissa on liikettä silloinkin kun hevonen on paikallaan – ainakin kuvaa katsovalla pitäisi olla sellainen tunne, että hevonen voisi koska tahansa lähteä liikkeelle.
Eikä hevosen kauneus ole ulkomuodosta kiinni vaan luonteesta ja sielusta. Jokaisella hevosella on selvästi oma persoonansa ja jokaisella hevosella on oma ilmeensä – en usko niitä, joiden mielestä hevosella on vain yksi ilme. Katsokaa vaikka hevosen silmiä – niistä kyllä kuvastuvat kaikki tunteet.
TYÖN KOKO
Teen haluamasi kokoisen työn (koko ja työn määrä vaikuttavat hintaan, joten kerron sen sinulle kun kuulen tarkemmin, minkä kokoisen ja näköisen työn haluat ja millä tekniikalla.
MATERIAALIT
Ostan materiaalit taiteilijatarvikeliikkeestä varmistaakseni, että ne ovat parasta laatua ja kestävät aikaa hyvin.
AIKATAULU
Aikatauluni voi vaihdella, joten varmista työtilanteeni ensin – etenkin jos kyse on kiireisestä työstä kuten esim syntymäpäivälahjasta. Joka tapauksessa pyrin toimittamaan valmiin työn kuukauden sisällä siitä kun olen aloittanut työn. Myös joululahjatilaukset on syytä jättää hyvissä ajoin.
VALOKUVAT
Jos vain aika ja etäisyys sallivat, mielelläni tapaan mallini henkilökohtaisesti. (Lähinnä jos asut Turun seudulla tai tuot hevosesi tänne käymään esim. kilpailuihin) Otan omia kuviani jos mahdollista, mutta haluan myös että minulle annetaan erilaisia valokuvia mallistani (kaikki kuvat palautetaan kun lähetän maalauksen sinulle). Tämä jo senkin takia, että hevonen on talvi- ja kesäkarvassa aivan eri näköinen. Kesäkuvassa erottuvat rakenteelliset yksityiskohdat paremmin. Lisäksi hevonen voi olla kuvissa aivan eri värinen valaistusolosuhteista riippuen (vertaa vaikka keskipäivän kirkasta valoa illan punertavaan valoon). Siksi haluan kuulla, mikä ilme ja mikä väri vastaavat parhaiten hevosta itseään.
Jos haluat yhdistää kaksi hevosta samaan kuvaan, ei niiden tarvitse silti poseerata täydellisesti samassa valokuvassa. Jos mahdollista, haluaisin kuitenkin nähdä kuvan, joka on otettu hevosista yhdessä (vaikka en siitä muotokuvaa tekisikään), jotta näen niiden kokoerot. Vähän karrikoiden sanottuna ei näytä hyvältä, jos kuvassa on shetlanninponin ja hevosen päät yhtä suurina. Jos ei ole mahdollista saada hevosia samaan kuvaan, olen kokoeron suhteen sen varassa, mitä kerrot minulle.
Valmiin taulun lopputulos on valokuvien varassa. Jos kuva on kovin pieni ja sumuinen, saatan joutua arvailemaan hevosen rakenteellisia yksityiskohtia. Jos kuva on terävä, on maalauskin parempi. Joka tapauksessa pyrin saamaan kuvaan hevoselle ominaisen ilmeen ja hiukan ”sitä jotakin”.
Maalatessani voin toki korjata korvien asentoa, ”kammata” hiukan häntää ja harjaa ja parantaa kaulan asentoa (ja halutusta asennosta saisi mielellään olla valokuva, jotten kaulasta tule väärän muotoinen). Ja oleellista on, että hevosen silmien ilmeestä on mahdollisimman hyvä kuva, sillä silmät luovat hengen koko maalaukseen.
Voin toki tehdä kuvan yhdestäkin valokuvasta, mutta jos kuvia on enemmän, saan yleensä irti enemmän yksityiskohtia itse maalaukseen.
MITEN KUVATA
Parhaan kuvan hevosesta saat, jos otat kuvan hevosen silmän korkeudelta. (Äläkä paina laukaisinta silloin, kun hevonen uteliaana työntää turpansa eteen haistellakseen kameraa)
Ota kuva mahdollisimman läheltä. Keskity siihen, että pää näkyy hyvin (ja jos kyse on koirasta tai kissasta – että ilme ja kasvot näkyvät hyvin – ja muista silloinkin ottaa kuva mallisi silmän korkeudelta, ellet halua muotokuvaa, jossa kohteesi katsoo ylöspäin).
Ota kuvat mieluiten ulkona hyvässä luonnonvalossa. Hyvin kirkas auringonvalo saattaa muuttaa hevosen värejä, joten tarkasta ottamasi kuvat ja se, onko väri niissä oikein. Sivuvalo tuo luuston rakenteen hyvin esille. Vältä kuvaa, jossa valo tulee takaa, koska silloin itse kohde saattaa olla liian tumma kuvassa. Katso, ettei kohteesi ylle lankea esim puun varjo – ellet siis halua kyseistä varjoa kuvaasi.
Paras kuvakulma on yleensä ”3/4” (kuvaan tulee enemmän syvyyttä kuin suoraan sivulta kuvattuna, mutta tottakai sivukuvastakin mielelläni teen muotokuvan). Mieluiten haluaisin valokuvia, jotka on otettu eri suunnista ja eri asennoissa. Paras tausta on vaalea ja rauhallinen (en maalaa taustaa kuvaan, mutta erotan vartalon muodon paremmin tällaisesta taustasta). Jos kohde on valkoinen, tietysti tummakin tausta on hyvä.
Pystyn maalaamaan vain sen, mitä näen, joten jos haluat tietyn ilmeen / asennon (silmät, korvat), tarkasta että kyseinen ilme myös näkyy jossain valokuvassasi.
Hyvät, tarkat lähikuvat tekevät minulle mahdolliseksi maalata tarkan muotokuvan.
Vaikka tilaisit mustavalkokuvan, kerro silti mikä värikuvista tarkimmin kuvastaa oikeaa väriä – sävyerot saa lyijykynälläkin näkyviin.
Skannatut kuvat/ sähköpostitse lähetetyt eivät välttämättä kerro todellistä väriä jos tietokoneitten/printterien erilaisten asetustenkin vuoksi.
Ja tietysti, jos kyseessä on jo edesmennyt eläinystäväsi eikä sinulla kerta kaikkiaan ole hyvää, terävää kuvaa, teen tietysti parhaani sen kuvan puitteissa joka sinulla on. Samoin voin tehdä muotokuvamaalauksen hyvinkin vanhasta valokuvasta. Jos haluat esim. mustavalkokuvasta värillisen kuvan, toimita minulle värimallit. Voit vaikka leikata lehdestä kuvan, jossa on oikea väri.
Muista, että useimmiten valokuvasi on ainoa tapaamiseni eläinystäväsi kanssa. Jos yksityiskohdat kuvissa eivät ole selviä sinun silmillesi, ne eivät ole sitä minullekaan.
Ja muistathan, että jos haluat käyttää ammattivalokuvaajan ottamaa kuvaa muotokuvan materiaalina, sinun on pyydettävä tähän kuvaajalta lupa. Oletan, että kuvat, jotka minulle toimitetaan, ovat sellaisia että niiden alkuperäinen ottaja on suostunut siihen, että hänen ottamaansa kuvaa käytetään muotokuvan maalaukseen. Jos kuvaaja niin haluaa, voin lisätä mahdollisesti nettisivuilleni liittämääni kuvaan maininnan siitä, kenen ottamaa kuvaa on käytetty muotokuvan mallina.
KEHYSTYS
Kun postitan kuvan, en mielellään lähetä kehystettyä työtä jo siksikin, että lasi saattaa rikkoutua ja turmella työn. Pastellityöt pitää kuitenkin kehystää mahdollisimman nopeasti, sillä ne ovat arkoja kosketukselle. Veluuri kyllä imee värin hyvin sisäänsä ja fiksatiivilla kiinnitettynä väri ei varise, mutta silti pastelli on arka kosketukselle. Lisäksi veluurille, kun sitä säilytetään suojaamattomana, kertyy helposti pölyä. jonka poistaminen on vaikeaa. Painaumien jälki jää veluuriin näkyviin pysyvästi, varsinkin jos painauma on terävä. Postittamisen jälkeen vastuu paketista on postilla.

Kun tiedän, paljonko työtä muotokuvasi teettää, ja minkä kokoinen se on, pystyn antamaan sinulle hinnan. Kun olemme sopineet maalauksen tekemisestä ja aikataulusta, annan sinulle postitusosoitteeni ja pyydän sinua postittamaan valokuvia ja kirjallisen tilauksen siitä, millaisen kuvan haluat (sähköpostitsekin käy). Jos et ole varma, minkälaisen työn haluat (esimerkiksi kun kuvassa on useampi kuin yksi hevonen, etkä ole varma, miten haluaisit ne aseteltavan), voin tehdä pari luonnosehdotelmaa ja lähettää ne sinulle sähköpostissa päätöksentekoa varten. Kun olen aloittanut työn, pidän sinut ajan tasalla sen edistymisen suhteen sähköpostitse. Ja kun kuva on valmis, otan siitä digikuvan ja lähetän sen sinulle. Kun olet nähnyt kuvan maalauksesta ja hyväksynyt sen, pyydän sinulta maksun. Lähetän maalauksen sinulle, kun olen saanut maksun (postituskulut laskutan samassa yhteydessä. Saat maksustasi kuitin. (Voit halutessasi maksaa myös osissa, mutta koko summan tulee olla maksettu ennen kuin lähetän taulun) Lähetän maalauksen postivakuutettuna milloin se on mahdollista. Se on lupaus läheisellesi, että maksat hänen tilaamansa maalauksen. Sinun ei tarvitse maksaa lahjakorttia etukäteen vaan pyydän maksusuorituksen vasta, kun kuva on valmis. (Huom: Valmista maalausta ei toimiteta ennen kuin se on maksettu)
